How to Add Old-Fashioned Vibes to Your Christmas Decor

One of my favorite ways to make our home feel extra cozy and unique during the holidays is by adding old-fashioned vibes to our Christmas decor. I recently shared some tips over on Instagram HERE, and I wanted to expand on it because, well, you all know how much I love to chat about making spaces feel cozy and unique. There’s just something about vintage touches and thrifted finds that makes a space feel lived-in and warm—a cozy reminder of simpler times. When it comes to Christmas, leaning into those nostalgic, old-fashioned & homemade, creates a magical charm that cannot be replicated. Here are a few ways I added vintage charm to our tree and Christmas decor this year, and how you can too!

1. Start with Thrifted and Antique Items

One of my favorite things to do year-round is treasure hunting at antique shops and thrift stores. These finds really come to life at Christmas! I like to look for vintage ornaments, old bells, and unique items that tell a story. Vintage ornament collections from old retailers, paper mache DIYs, and even vintage post cards -perfection isn’t the goal here!

2. Layer in Timeless Textures

Adding cozy layers is key to creating that old-fashioned look. Velvet bows and ribbons, ornaments of difference sizes and materials. Also timeless to me can also mean “implied Christmas decor items.” It doesn’t have to have a Santa or say Christmas on it, implied decor is like red stripping or an old linen pattern that just feels like the holidays, it can be something other than a poinsettia print, in my chase this lovely chair to showcasing the perfect color scheme for the holidays .

3. Repurpose What You Have

One thing I adore about vintage-inspired Christmas decor is how much you can repurpose everyday items. An old basket becomes a tree base or even antique books stacked beneath a vignette add a cozy layer. Sometimes the most charming pieces are the ones that were never intended to be “holiday decor” at all!

4. Add Natural Elements

To keep things feeling authentic and organic, I mix in natural elements like dried orange slices, real greenery, pinecones, and twigs. These simple, natural touches complement the vintage items so beautifully. Bonus: they’re affordable and easy to make!

5. Create Moments of Whimsy

Lastly, don’t be afraid to get a little playful! For me, it’s all about creating moments that make people stop and smile. Maybe it’s a tiny vintage truck carrying a bottlebrush tree, or an antique sled leaned up in a corner. These touches bring that nostalgic “old-fashioned Christmas” feel to life in your home. I hope this inspires you to create a cozy, vintage-inspired Christmas in your own space. Remember, the beauty is in the imperfections and the stories these pieces tell. There’s no right or wrong way to do this—if it brings you joy, that’s all that matters.
